Chengdu Economic & Technological Development Zone was inaugurated in July
1990 and ratified by State Council as National Economic & Technological
Development Zone in February 2000. In September 2005, it was approved to
be the National Electronic Devices Industrial Park by Ministry of Information
Industry. Its planned area is 40 square kilometers, and the first constructed
9.94 square kilometers industrial layout mainly focuses on mechanics, electronic
industry, new materials and food processing. The planned expanding area
is 29 square km and now is under large-scale construction. Over 200 projects
from more than 20 countries and areas were put into production. CDETDZ will
be built to be a modern manufacturing base in western China. Chengdu Economic
and Technological Development Zone (CETDZ) lies 13.6 kilometers east of
Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province and the hub of transportation
and communication in southwest China. Chengdu has a sub-tropical monsoon
climate, with distinct four seasons and plenty of rainfall. The annual average
temperature measures 16.6 centigrade. Chengdu is one of the 45 main highway
hubs in China. There are 9 national trunk lines and highways crossing through
or starting from Chengdu. The city has one of Chinas densest highway networks,
with 10 expressways so far, of which, two are leading to the sea: Chengdu-Beihai
and Chengdu-Chongqing-Shanghai. Chengdu is an important railway hub in southwestern
China, where four trunk lines, Chengdu-Chongqing, Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Kunming
and Daxian-Chengdu, cross. At present, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Nanjing,
Qingdao and Lianyuangang are the ports of entry and exit for railway transportation
of Chengdu imported and exported goods. Chengdu has opened 9 cargo railway
routes towards Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjing, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Xuzhou,
Lianyungang and Lanzhou, which are recognized by quickness, fixed departure
and arrival, and low freight. Chengdu railway stations currently can handle
100 000 containers per year. The Chengdu Railway Container Center is under
construction, and its first part expected to be finished and put into use
in the first quarter of 2008, which shall then have an annual handling capacity
of more than 1 million containers and 12 million tons of cargo. So far,
the major domestic and international airlines which provide passenger and
cargo services at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport include China
International Airlines Southwestern Company and Sichuan Airlines, Eastern
Airlines, Southern Airlines, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, Thai Airlines, Korea
Asian Airlines, Macau Airlines and Singapore Silk Airlines. The main airplane
types are Boeing 757, 737 and Airbus 340, 321, 320 of big and medium size.
The annual passenger occupancy being 62% and the load ratio 58% averagely,
the air transport capacity is relatively abundant, able to provide mixed
traffic and chartered cargo flights for customers. CETDZ is 28 km
away from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, one of the countries four
major airports. Chengdu-Chongqing Expressway is on its north, and Chengdu-Kunming
Railway on the west. Cheng-Long Highway, the City-ring Expressway, and Chenghuan
Highway run through and around the zone. One can directly reach Chongqing
Jiulong Harbor and Luzhou International Freight Dock by Chengdu-Chongqing
Expressway. CETDZ focuses on machinery, electronics, metallurgy, building
materials, medicine, and food processing.
