As the provincial capital city, Xining is the center of politics, economy,
culture, education, technology, transportation and commerce in Qinghai province.
Xining Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved as state-level
development zone in July 2000. It is the first industrial zone of that level
in the region.
Geographical Location
Xining lies in the
east part of Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and the upper reaches of Shuang Shui
River. It has a history of over 2100 years. It is composed of four districts,
three counties and one Economic & Technological Development Zone. With a
total territory of 7,665 square kilometers, it has a total population of
2.1 million. Xining is also a multi-religion city.
Climate
The average altitude of the urban
area is 2275 meters. It is not cold in winter and not very hot in summer,
belonging to the typical mainland plateau climate. The average annual temperature
is 7.7 c, and the annual rainfall is 425 millimeter.
Natural Resources
There are 10 major types
of mineral resources in the region, including coal, iron and copper, among
which quartzite and basalt reserve tops the rank in the nation. Other minerals
such as Kainite, Lithium, Iodine, sulfur and asbestos are also among the
rich regions. Water and electricity supplies are abundant in Xining. The
upper reaches of yellow river feed thirteen large hydroelectric power plants
with a total output of 36 billion kilowatts annually. After half century's
migration, Xining has enjoyed enormous growth through developments of its
industrial body compromising of mechanical, light textile, metallurgy, food
processing, industrial tools and equipment, and other manufacturing sectors
of specialty products such as Tibetan blanket, Tibetan medicine, fern and
horse beans. All these products are very competitive in the international
market.
Transportation
Xining Industrial Zone has been established
convenient transportation system, with Xining-Lanzhou expressway and famous
Qinghai-Tibet Railroad passing through the area. The industrial zone is
only four kilometers away from the railway station and fifteen kilometers
from Xining Airport, a class 4D airport with 14 airlines serving a number
of routes to other major cities in China, including Beijing, Guangzhou,
Shanghai, Chengdu and Xian.
Human Resources
There are 99 institutes and over 70,000
scientists, researchers and engineers in Xining conducting scientific
research and providing technical services. The city is also the home to
seven formal universities
with 12,000 students, and to 18 secondary technical schools with nearly 10,000
students.
Investment Priorities
Xining Industrial Zone gives priority to export-oriented
industrial projects utilizing foreign capital and employing high
technologies. It focuses on the development of following industries:
chemicals based on salt lake resources, nonferrous metals, and petroleum
and natural gas processing; special medicine, foods and bio-chemicals
using local plateau animals and plants; new products involving
ecological and environmental protection, high technology, new materials
as well as information technology; and services such as logistics,
banking, real estate, tourism, hotel, catering, agency and international
trade.
