With well considered preparations, necessary assisting equipments and reasonable arrangements, travelers with disabilities not only can not enjoy the travel to China, but also can to certain extent improve their physical strength. Disabled travelers are welcome to China and will be treat friendly by hospitable Chinese people. In the recent years, barrier-free environment has been developed rapidly in China. More and more transportation vehicles, hotels and other public areas can be easily accessed by disabled travelers.

The following are some useful tips for disabled tourists when traveling to China.

Choose appropriate destinations by taking natural settings, cultural, especially barrier-free environment into consideration. Beijing certainly is a great place for disable tourists as it has abundant historical and modern attractions and has the best developed barrier-free infrastructures in China after its successful preparations for the Beijing 2008 Paralympics Games. In addition, a number of large cities including Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang and Qingdao have also created favorable environments for the disabled travelers.

Make sure that you are fit to travel. Do a thorough physical examination and seek advice from your doctor concerning travel feasibilities and itinerary planning.

Book a private or small group tour with you family or friends, which can better accommodate your special needs and provide more flexible travel schedule.

Disclose your physical conditions to your travel agency so they can customize your tour in advance.

Setup a relaxing, flexible and fairly simple itinerary. The tour routes should have plenty of stops for you to take a break.

Pack your luggage carefully. Make sure to bring sufficient medicines and assisting equipments necessary for your travel. If the condition permits, bring key spare parts and toolbox with you in case the equipments require emergent repairs.

Seek help from the airport staff or other transportation agencies. They can assist you to get familiarized with the barrier-free facilities and equipments.

It would be wise to buy appropriate travel insurance.

Make sure to get familiar with hotel evacuation procedures in the event of fire or other emergencies.
