There are tens of thousands of trained and licensed tour guides in
China. Many of them are professors, librarians, and teachers, working
part time, but all have passed a strict examination and certified by the
authorities to be qualified for working as tour guides.
The travel agents in China are categorized into three classes, among
which only the first class can work directly with foreign tour
operators. Tour guides working for the first class agents are usually
experienced and can speak fluent English.
In general, tour guides in less developed areas, such as along the Silk
Road, in Tibet and in part of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, are less
qualified than those working in the large cities in terms of overall
quality and English proficiency.
