 China Travel Tips  -  Normal Business Hours in China

 
 

A Five-day workweek, Monday through Friday, is applied throughout China. The normal working hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 each day, with a lunch break from 12:00 to 14:00. Besides the regular days off, Saturday and Sunday, Chinese worker also enjoy a number of official holidays including New Year's Day, December 30 to January 1; Spring Festival, from the last day of a year to the 6th day of the new year in the Chinese lunar calendar; Qingming Festival; from April 4 to April 6 in the Chinese lunar calendar; May Day, from May 1 to May 3; Dragon Boat Day, the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar; Mid-Autumn Festival, August 15th in the Chinese lunar calendar; and National Day, from September 29 to October 5.

Different government or business sectors in different regions may have different working hours.

Government offices in general are open from 8:00 to 17:00 or 08:30 to 17:30, Monday through Friday with two and half hour lunch breaks; close on Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays.

Post offices and banks usually open from 9:00 to17:00 weekdays, which is reduced by one to three hours on weekends and official holidays. Some banks may close on weekends and holidays, but CDM, ATM and other self-service transaction terminals operate 24/7.

Hospitals and clinics typically open from 8:00 to 18:00 with two and  half hour lunch breaks. On weekends and official holidays, some hospitals stay open for half a day. Emergency rooms of all hospitals open around clock.

Most kiosks, small shops, supermarkets and department stores in general open from 8:30-9:30 to 21:30-22:30 everyday. Some kiosks and small shops may open earlier and close later. During the holiday seasons, except for the Spring Festival, many shops and stores may extend their business hour. During the Spring Festival, most stores close for two or three days.

Most formal dining facilities open from 10:30 or 11:00 to 21:30 or 22:00 everyday, with an afternoon break from 14:30 t0 17:00. Some smaller restaurants serving breakfasts may open as early as 6:00 and stay open until midnights. Many restaurants extend their business hours on weekend and during holiday seasons.
