Tipping or gratuities are not common practices in most sectors of
Chinese life. However, tipping has become a normal practice for visitors
to tip the tour guide and driver in recognition of their good service.
Some hotel bellboys would also expect your tips. It is not customary to
leave tips at hotel or local restaurant as the bill usually includes
10-15% service charge. Some restaurant even have very strict rules,
prohibiting their waitpersons from being tipped by guests. In this case,
tipping a waiter may get him in trouble.
In general, foreign books, DVDs, music CDs, perfumes are considered as
small but good gifts in China. The tour guides and drivers would always
appreciate any types of gifts from the tourists. You can gift the tour
guide as if you are gifting a friend in your hometown. However, any
items clearly marked “Made in China” generally are not good choices for
gifts.
