Bund Shanghai is a old yet popular
tourist destination. Around Bund Shanghai are many most recognizable architectural
symbols of old Shanghai. Word Bund derives from an Anglo-Indian term for
an embankment along a muddy waterfront. Bund Shanghai did serve such a purpose
in the initial stage when the first British company opened its office there
in 1846. Bund Shanghai has been the epitome of elegance throughout its hundred
year history.

At present time, a series of tourist attractions and impressive new constructions
have been erected in the bund area. A 771-meter long retaining wall was
built to prevent the area from being flooded. Atop the wall of Bund Shanghai
is a wide walkway decorated with colorful tiles and dotted with flower-beds
and European-style garden lights, for tourists to do sightseeing. Bund Shanghai
is a must-visit Shanghai attraction for foreign tourists. It is a good place
for a relaxed stroll while viewing the Huangpu River and enjoying the mixture
of new and old Shanghai themes.
Started in 2008, a major reconfiguration of traffic flow along Bund
Shanghai has been
carried out. The first stage of the renovation plan involved the southern end of the
Bund, and saw the demolition of a section of the Yan'an Road , formerly Edward
VII Avenue, elevated expressway, which will remove the old Shanghai's
exit structure of elevated expressway dominated the confluence of Yan'an
Road and the Bund. The second stage, begun in March 2008, involved removal
and complete restoration of the century old Waibaidu Bridge, a symbol of
the old Shanghai, at the northern end of the Bund. The restoration is expected to
be completed in 2009. The next and largest stage of the plan involves
a reconstruction of Bund Shanghai roadway. The current 8-lane roadway will be
rebuilt as in two levels, with four lanes on each level. This will allow
part of the Bund road space to be restored to its former use as parkland
and marginal lawns. The new concrete bridge built in 1991 to relieve traffic
on Waibaidu Bridge will also be rendered obsolete by the new double-leveled
roadway, and will be demolished.
