Shanghai Attractions - Major Tourist Sites

Shanghai attractions - The Bund of Shanghai

The Bund is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. Word Bund derives from an Anglo-Indian term for an embankment along a muddy waterfront. It served such a purpose in the initial stage when the first British company opened an office there in 1846. It has been the epitome of elegance throughout its hundred year history. At present time, a series of tourist attractions and impressive new constructions have been erected in the bund area. A 771-meter long retaining wall was built to prevent the area from being flooded. Atop the wall is a wide walkway, colorful tiles and dotted with flower-beds and European-style garden lights, for tourists to do sightseeing. It is a must-visit Shanghai attraction for foreign tourists. It is a good place for a relaxed stroll while viewing the Huangpu River.

Shanghai attractions - Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai

As a typical garden attractions in southern China, Yuyuan Garden is located in the center of Shanghai downtown, close to the Bund. With a total area less than 5 acres, there are over 40 Shanghai attractions in the inner and outer gardens. Both gardens were built in the Ming Dynasty classical style.

This portion of Shanghai attractions feature traditional Chinese style architectures, unique natural scenic rocks, impressive woods and ponds as well as dragon-lined walls, ancient doorways, zigzagging bridges.

The garden displays  various valuable collectibles such as century old furniture, calligraphy and paintings of famous artists, clay sculptures, brick carvings, inscriptions and couplets. Another highlight in this popular shanghai attraction is a exquisite jade stone that weighs five tons and is porous. This naturally shaped and translucent grotesque rock came from Tai lake in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. The rock originally was Emperor Huizong's private collection.

Shanghai attractions - Jade Buddha Temple of Shanghai

This is an active temple with 70 resident monks at the last court. The temple is built between 1911 and 1918 in a Song dynasty style, with symmetrical halls and courtyards, upturned eaves, and bright yellow walls. The exterior is readily identifiable by the bright saffron walls. The centerpiece inside the temple is a nearly two meter tall white marble Buddha. It was moved here by a monk from Burma in 1882. A smaller reclining Buddha from the same shipment lies on a redwood bed. There are three gold-plated Buddha statues in the large hall. The temple also collects large numbers of artifacts. Another feature of this Shanghai attractions is 7,000 Buddhist sutras line the walls. Many collectibles are available for sale here, including miniature sandalwood drums and gongs, replicas of the large ones used in ceremonies. Tourists may also see monk's actual worshiping. A vegetarian restaurant can be found here.
