As the capital city of China, Beijing has been enjoying extremely convenient transportation for many years. In terms of intra city transportation, Beijing has one of the best city bus and subway networks in the world. In addition, there are over 70,000 taxi cabs running in every corner of the city. In order to better serve the Olympic Games, 90,000 taxi drivers had been required to speak basic English. If you are traveling in and out Beijing, transportation is equally convenient. The newly renovated international airport now handles over two thousands daily flights servicing large number of domestic destinations in all thirty provinces and special districts. The airport is also one of China's three major international gateways, with daily flight services to more than hundred international cities or regions. The improved railway systems can also provide fast and comfortable transportations to hundreds domestic cities.

Beijing City Guide  - Transportation - Subway

Beijing City Guide - Subway systemSubways are the fastest transportation in Beijing. They are ideal travel tools to avoid frequent traffic jams, a serious problem this capital city is now facing. Beijing's subway network effectively connects city's central sites such as Tiananmen Square, Qianmen and the railway stations with the newly developed outskirt areas.

Line 1 runs under Chang'an Avenue, extending from Sihuidong in the east to Pingguoyuan in the west.

Line 2 circles under the northern part of the 2nd Ring Road. Line 1 and Line 2 are interchangeable at Fuxingmen station and Jianguomen station without additional costs.

Line 5 was put in operation recently. It is parallel to Line 1. There are 4 intersections with other two lines, Chongwenmen, Dongdan, Yonghe Palace and Lishuiqiao.

The price for subway is a flat charge of two yuan, no matter how long and how many transfers you are going to take underground. Different from the city bus system, no weekly or monthly passes issued for subway. However,  A rechargeable smart transit card is available for purchase. In the subway system, all stops are announced in both Chinese and English. There are also staff on duty, providing assistance to the passengers who are not familiar with the system. While Beijing subway system may not be the best yet in the country, it is a far better choice for getting around the city comparing to city buses and even taxi services
